Race Report from last weekend's race in Seattle:

Many thanks to David et Al. for his hospitality in Bellingham, Jim & Sue Rhodes for lodging and sourdough pancakes at 4:30 am on Sunday, and to the 4 additional sets of parents who showed up with food and moral support throughout the day.
Everyone took an active role in Sunday's Seward Park criterium. Matt Thurber, who was battling a head cold, started his first race ever on a wet & hilly crit after Saturday's team time trial and circuit race were canceled due to snow. He finished with a smile on his face, looking for more. Stephen and Alex both took fliers in their respective races and sparked some concerned chases. Thaddeus returned to racing with a respectable top 10 in a hairy pack finish. In the A's, everyone was in a promising break at one point only to get shut down by a very eager pack that was willing to chase their own teammates. The WSU counterattacks continued against the yellow jersey until a bunch of fried legs eventually let Ben get away for a prime, which turned into a gap, which turned into a sluggish and unintended time trial by Ben. Ben thanks Tristan, Adam, and Severin for covering wheels and screwing up the chase, otherwise he would certainly have been caught (his words, not mine). A UO and OSU rider eventually got away and bridged up to Ben, which effectively neutralized the pack chase. Adam then set Tristan up for a nice 6th place finish in the pack sprint. Ben finished in 3rd position, behind a "controversial" UW racer who broke away in the beginning. His 3rd place finish (and the fact that the previous yellow jersey was squeezed out of the top ten) secured his position in the yellow jersey. This means defending duties for WSU this weekend in Portland, so stay tuned to see how that turns out!

WSU Cycling had some great races this past weekend in Eugene and Corvallis. In the men's A road race, Ben Rhodes got himself in the winning break away and scored second place on the day. Stephen Howard raced to a nice top-10 result in the B's, and Tyler Stearns kicked off his racing career with an 8th place in the C's. Alex LeFriec slided in to a top-20 slot, but would have probably won outright if he'd take a rest week once in a while.
The Team Time Trial went pretty well, with the men's A team finishing in 2nd place to WWU. Considering the terrible course and the mechanical suffered by the author, I'd say we did pretty well to get second.
The Campus Criterium in Corvallis saw the best racing of the weekend, with some great results in all categories. Adam Southerland made the move early on in the men's A criterium to get into the winning break away, earning second place for his efforts. 40 minutes into the race, Ben Rhodes decided he wanted a piece of the action and soloed off the front for third place. Severin Skolrud and the author had their hands full controlling the attacks from the Oregon schools, and overall it went very well. In the mens' B criterium, Stephen Howard raced his muddy beard into a top-20 spot, and Tyler Stearns finished in 5th place in the C crit after a nice crash on the last lap. Did I mention Alex LeFriec needs to take a rest week?
Stay tuned for further race reports in the coming weeks,
